Flip'ping over latest West Coast CD Offering by Bob Schnettler

As I opened my front door, all I could see was a hand holding a CD directly before my eyes. "Does Bob Schnettler live here?," the feminine voice asked.

I answered affirmatively and the hand dropped, revealing Joyce Oakes, wife of a good friend and former area musician Flip Oakes. Joyce was in Olean to visit her mother and stated Flip wanted me (as well as Richard "Doc" Gilroy and Mac Sue) to have a copy of the latest offering of the South Market Street jazz Band. Flip plays trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn with the San Diego-area group which recently reformed after a short breakup. He also had been with the earlier group.

Flip, born Philip Oakes Jr. named after his also musical father, grew up performing in the Olean area not only on brass but also on reeds and even vocalizing. A Franklinville native, he lived in Olean before moving west in 1977.

During the years the original "Love Boat" TV show was on the air, Flip and Mac Sue performed aboard the vessel serving as the show's base, traveling to such spots as China, Alaska, Mexico and South America. Once that gig was over, Mac returned to Olean, but Flip and Joyce stayed in California.

Since then, Flip has not only made a performing name for himself, but also has developed a trumpet/cornet he calls "Wild Thing," a holdover to the instrument repairs he did while living here. He says the instrument offers "just the right sound with ease of playing that no other trumpet he ever played could."

When he showed it to musical friends, they tried it and often explained, "This thing is really wild." Thus the name. Offered through Flip's web site, the Wild Thing is selling well, according to Joyce, who handles the office work, especially while her husband is on the road performing at many of the numerous traditional, Dixieland and jazz
festivals which are offered each week throughout the west, U.S. southwest and southwest Canada.

Flip is a regular trumpeter with not only South Market, but also Conrad Janis and the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band, as well as his own Flip Oakes Jazz Party Quartet. I also caught sight of Flip on TV when the millionaire (I forget his name) sponsored a huge party during the national convention out that way last fall. Janis is the longtime movie actor/musician who is best known outside jazz circles as Mindy's father on the old "Mork & Mindy" TV show.

Flip's late mother, Patty, was a vocalist who performed with her husband and son, and many's the time she and I sang "Tea for Two" as the three of them played in the Lime Lake or Ellicottville areas. At one time the elder Oakes owned and operated a restaurant in Farmersville, joined by their son as they presented weekly music.

After Patty died, Flip took his dad from his Franklinville mobile home, to live with him in Oceanside, CA. Shortly after Phil died, I received a VCR tape of his memorial service, which included a true Dixieland parade down Oceanside streets, into a back yard where a jam session was conducted with many of the musicians both Flip and Phil played with on the West Coast.

As for the new CD, "Potpourri," it was quickly listened to and proved so good that I played it several times in succession. It showed me that as good as Flip had been, he's even better now playing his Wild-Thing in a manner which ranks him among the best of the trumpeters in the. business today.

Especially impressive is his take on "Pete Kelly's Blues," and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire band's rendition of the rousing "Big Bear Stomp." This is a CD which has remained on my machine almost continuously since Joyce dropped it off.

She said Flip had to remain in California so as to sign papers for a new home they're buying in Oceanside.

You can keep track of Flip and his Wild Thing at his web site, http://www.flipoakes.com/ and email flip at flip@flipoakes.com

Of course you may order a copy of the CD "Potpourri" from  the South Market St. Jazz Band website at http://www.southmarketstreetjazzband.com/cd_sales.htm

The NEW South Market Street Jazz Band is HERE!!!!!

Announcement....

Hello Everyone,

Oct.25,2000 I played on a recording that has just come out. It's with
The New South Market St. Jazz Band. It was recorded at Proxy Music Prod.in Oceanside Ca.

proxymusic2@home.com

The band was recorded live. Mostly all 1st takes
except when the computer crashed, (3 times) and we had to do a retake.

In all fairness it was the first time the studio ever used this new program for digital recording,
and they were working with this new software.

We were in and out in 3 1/2 hours, not knowing if we had anything. This
is playing Dixieland Jazz, with head arrangements on the spot. Of Course
I'm playing my Flip Oakes Wild Thing Trumpet, and Cornet. I also play
the Kanstul 1525 on Just Squeeze me. It's a very good band, and I'm
certain would be enjoyed.

We are happy to announce our new CD release!

The New South Market St. Jazz Band presents "Potpourri"

More News from Flip Oakes.

Hello Everyone,

I have wonderful Cornet Mouthpieces, that are true deep "V" cups with #18 bores. Available in different sizes, and now *two* different blanks as well.

1) Bach, or traditional looking type blank.

2) Old Style Blank, the turn of the century looking blank that will fit any American made modern day cornet. It's also a bit shorter, and responds faster then the other one.  You can see the #1) Traditional type on the mouthpieces page.

I'll be putting up the Old Style very soon as well. All mouthpieces of all sizes are in stock.

 Sincerely,
 Flip Oakes

Flip Oakes Wild Thing Trumpet now available in

Flip Oakes  NEW "Wild Thing Mouthpieces" In Stock!

A Wild Thing Mouthpiece?

After receiving many inquires as to what mouthpiece plays well with your Wild Thing Trumpets and Cornets ? Is there maybe something better I should try?

I called Mark Curry, A top call studio, and show trumpet player, who is also a first rate mouthpiece designer, maker and manufacture in Reno NV.

After talking to Mark for sometime, I decided the best way for him to use his expertise was to ship him a Wild Thing Trumpet to play, and experience first hand, and then ask him, what were his thoughts and suggestions as to designing a "Standard Type Mouthpiece
" for most common playing situations? A all around mouthpiece that has a rich full bodied sound, that also would enhance the upper register.

Mark has played the Bb Wild Thing Trumpet for some time now, in all different types of musical situations including shows, and recording dates etc.

He has now designed perfect mouthpiece for these horns!

They're GREAT!. The produce a  wonderful sound and ease of playing.
through suburb design and craftsmanship. That's quality manufacturing !

He's chosen a different blank to start with from his own Curry Mouthpieces, as he say's "With the Wild Thing Trumpet '' these will light up faster !!

These mouthpieces are manufactured by Mark Curry expressively for Flip Oakes,
and sold only through "Flip Oakes Wild Thing Trumpets".
They sell for $60.00 each

The Trumpet Mouthpiece is a medium deep cup.
Cornet mouthpiece is a true deep "V" cup for a "Real Traditional Cornet Sound". The Flugelhorn mouthpiece is also a very deep, and dark sounding.
The Flugelhorn Mouthpiece will also be offered in both "Tapered, and
French (straight) Shanks.

These are now available in the following sizes..... 1, 1.25, 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 10.5 .....

There is a Flip Oakes Personal Model as well. All rims and sizes are based on Mt. Vernon Models.

One Other Thing !!

Mark Curry is Now Also A Proud Owner Of A Wild Thing Trumpet !

His Full Endorsement is posted on my testimonials  page .

Thank you,
Flip Oakes

What about the tuning slides you ask?

Please make a note that this only applies to the Bb Wild Thing Trumpet.....

#3 and 4 tuning slides are bigger variations on the #2 conical slide

I'll explain........

#2 (smallest) ML bore top leg of the tuning slide, ML+ bore in the tuning slide bow, L bore bottom leg of the tuning slide that enters the horn.

#3 (larger) ML+ bore top leg of the tuning slide, ML+ bore in the tuning slide bow, L bore bottom leg of the tuning slide that enters the horn.

#4 (larger then #2+#3) ML+ bore top leg of the tuning slide, L bore in the tuning slide bow, L bore bottom leg of the tuning slide that enters the horn.

#1(Largest) L bore top leg of the tuning slide, L bore in the tuning slide bow, L bore bottom leg of the tuning slide that enters the horn.

The Bb Wild thing trumpet will still be sold as before with the #1 and # 2 as stock items.
The #3 and #4 slides will be sold as options.

Most players start out by playing the #2 slide when they first get the horn. When they want " the real Open Wild Thing Trumpet", they play the #1 . The #1 slide is what I always play, and this is what  consider the horn to be. If the players find that the #2 is too small , and the 1 is too open ( big), well then they have the option of the # 3 or the #4 slides...Its whatever the player wants. It now makes it 4 different trumpets in one !!

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Flip Oakes

April 22,1999
Another Wild Thing Enhancement modification!

Wild Thing Trumpet and Cornet Customers purchased prior to April 22, 1999
should consider this modification.

READ ON....

I've had some special tools made, that just arrived late last week. They
fit up inside in certain areas and remove any unseen solder or uneven
fittings that aren’t of the original design. This process removes a very
small amount of any unwanted material and makes dramatic improvement in
the playing of the horn in every way. Even though I've done my best in
seeing these instruments have been made with exact precision and care.
Reality is there aren’t exactly two of anything made alike, regardless
of what it is , or who's doing it.

In beginning my personal quest on improving instruments, since 1972
I've always changed or experimented with my personal instruments first,
and I've been the Tester. " This New Process " has made a very
big difference on all my personal Flip Oakes "Wild Thing Trumpets and
Cornet" that I was 100% satisfied with anyway. My Personal, and Business
Ethics are that, "I've always wanted to offer The Best Product
Possible. Its my opinion this just makes them even better in every way.
There is however no way to undo this process. 100% of all shipments from
this day forward will have this process done .

Any of my customers wanting to send their Flip Oakes "Wild Thing
Trumpets or Cornets" back to me, and pay for the shipping both
ways,........I'll do this process FREE of charge, and ship back the next
week day. Please make scheduling arrangements first so I don't receive
over a hundred horns in one or two days.......:)

Thanks To Everyone,
